Golovkin vs Monroe Live Stream Fight Time and TV Info

Gennady Golovkin will look to add the name of Willie Monroe Jr. to his lengthy list of victims when the two middleweights clash in Inglewood, California, on Saturday.

GGG (32-0, 29KO) will put his WBA and IBO titles on the line against an American opponent who has never previously fought in a 12-round contest.

However, Monroe (19-1, 6KO) must be taken seriously by the champion, who will be looking toward appearing in some money-spinning fights in the future.

But before he can think about Miguel Cotto or Saul Alvarez, Golovkin first has to do the business against a fighter who will be eager to make the most of his opportunity in the big time.

When: Saturday, May 16, 10 p.m. (ET)/7 p.m. (PT)/3 a.m. (BST)

Where: "Fabulous" Forum, Inglewood, California

TV: HBO (US), BoxNation (UK)

Live Stream: HBO, BoxNation (UK, regional restrictions apply)

While boxing fans love him, Golovkin is a nightmare matchup for the other middleweights.

Big and powerful and with an aggressive approach, he delivers stoppages that thrill the crowd but make potential opponents wonder if they are better off steering well clear.

He wants to clean up at 160 pounds, telling Brian Campbell of ESPN: "My goal is to win all of the belts in the middleweight division. For me that is very important. I want a unification fight. But for right now my focus is on Monroe. He is a good fighter and I respect him."

His team pushed for a unification clash with Cotto, the current holder of the WBC belt.

However, Tom Loeffler—Golovkin's promoter—revealed to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports that he "got zero response whatsoever" from Cotto's camp over a potential showdown between the two champions.

Until those major fights can be made, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist—who represented his homeland of Kazakhstan in the Games but is now based in California—will continue to stay active.

Picking out Monroe for a fight could be seen as a gamble, simply because there is little really for Golovkin to gain.

Yet, when you have stopped 29 of your 32 opponents to date, the odds are always going to be heavily in your favour. Oddsshark certainly agrees; Golovkin is 1-100 to remain perfect in the professional ranks.

It would be nice to say that a victory over Monroe would move him closer to a bout with one of the division's other big names, but there's hardly a long queue forming to take on the 33-year-old.

Golovkin has beaten opponents with bigger and better reputations than Monroe, a 28-year-old whose record suggests he doesn't have the power to worry the champion too much.

However, what the rank outsider does have in his favour is the fact he is a southpaw. And a southpaw with a healthy reach advantage too (74" versus Golovkin's 70″).

Even Golovkin admits that he will have to come to terms with meeting a different type of fighter, per Miguel Maravilla of Fightnews.com:

This is my second fight this year. Why Monroe? He is a southpaw.

Everyone has problems with southpaws.

Sergio Martinez is a southpaw, Floyd is number one pound-for-pound in the world and he had trouble with Judah – a southpaw, Miguel Cotto against Trout, Canelo-Lara, everyone has problems with a southpaw and it’s a challenge.

Monroe's most recent outing saw him defeat Brian Vera—who had previously lost twice in a row to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr—on points.

He has gone the distance in his last five outings, with his only defeat as a pro coming against journeyman Darnell Boone (who had a 17-17 record at the time) back in 2011.

The Mongoose will have to strike from distance and look frustrate his rival. While a win is a tall order, he can certainly make it a tough evening for Golovkin at the wonderfully named "Fabulous" Forum.

Prediction

Sometimes in boxing you can make a real case for the underdog to come out on top. This, though, is not one of those occasions.

Golovkin may still need to prove himself against the very best (if they ever agree to face him), but he has had no problems putting away fighters who are not on his level.

Against Martin Murray last time out he was taken beyond the 10th round for the first time in his career, yet that said more about the Englishman's grit and determination than anything else.

Monroe's southpaw stance will give Golovkin something to think about, and therefore a stoppage won't arrive until the middle rounds. Expect GGG to show off his power once again and make it 33 straight wins.

Alvarez vs Kirkland Live Stream! Fight Time, Date and TV Info

Compelling characters make boxing interesting. We have two ready to square off on Saturday night from Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, when Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KO) takes on James "Mandingo Warrior" Kirkland (32-1, 28 KO) in what could be a knockdown, drag-out fight.

The chances this one goes the distance seem slim. Kirkland's style is one that almost guarantees a stoppage, one way or the other. He's had only three fights in his career go the scheduled distance.

Alvarez knows what he's in store for against Kirkland. Per Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times, Alvarez said: “Kirkland is very strong and dangerous, a big puncher and I’ve trained so hard I’m prepared to go the distance if I need to. Every fight for me now is dangerous and tough. That’s how I’ve prepared.”

When: Saturday, May 9 at 9 p.m. ET
Where: Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas
TV: HBO
Live Stream: BoxNation (In UK only)

The Heir Apparent

The title of No. 1 Mexican fighter is there for Alvarez to claim. With Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. looking less legendary in every passing fight, Alvarez is in position to be the man. Because of that status, Alvarez also has the chance to become the top pay-per-view star in the sport once Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have hung up their gloves.

After losing to Mayweather in 2013, Alvarez is looking to establish an identity in the sport. He's fought and won twice since then, but his best showing was against a clearly overmatched Alfredo Angulo in March 2014.

Is Canelo a boxer/puncher or a classic Mexican slugger?

It's unclear if the 24-year-old star from Jalisco, Mexico, even knows who he is just yet. He might not have had a career-defining bout yet in his career. Every fighter needs a signature performance; Alvarez is still searching for his own.

The Thriller

Kirkland will do his part to create something special. There isn't a more dynamic puncher in the sport than the 31-year-old from Austin, Texas.

His 84.85 percent KO rate is impressive. In his career, he's proven to have one-punch KO power and the toughness to get off the canvas and stop an opponent, as he did against Angulo in 2011. It was a Nigel Benn-like performance. Kirkland is not without flaws inside the ring and out.

His lone loss came in what was supposed to be a tuneup bout against Nobuhiro Ishida in 2011 that turned into an embarrassing first-round TKO loss. Since then, Kirkland has won five fights in a row, with none of them going the distance. However, he hasn't fought since 2013, when he stopped Glen Tapia in the sixth round.

Management changes and legal struggles have dogged Kirkland's career. He signed with rapper/boxing promoter 50 Cent in October 2013, but the only fight he's had since is the bout with Tapia. In an interview with Anson Wainwright of Ring.TV, Kirkland says the layoff was due to him turning down undesirable fights.

Previous layoffs in his career have been caused by stints in prison. Since 2003, Kirkland has been in jail twice. There's no disputing his talent, but his unpredictable behavior has stagnated his career.

On Saturday, he has an opportunity to put himself on the fast track to stardom and notoriety. If he can beat Canelo, the entire boxing world will know who James Kirkland is, and it'll be based solely on his in-ring accomplishments, not his crimes outside of it.

While this bout will lay a perennial rivalry to rest, those expecting a high-octane slugfest are going to be very disappointed. Indeed, if anything, the early rounds of this fight will be very cagey and exceptionally tense given what’s at stake.

Mayweather will have no issues with an arduous early tempo. Throughout his career the American has flourished when his opponent begins to slow down, picking off lazy punches and counterattacking with the ruthlessness you’d expect from a man who has won all 47 of his professional bouts. Indeed, of the two, it’s definitely going to be Pacquiao who is most likely to force the issue.

Floyd has picked up on that in the build-up though, insisting his opponent can become a little ragged at times, per Peter Gilbert of Sky Sports:

He's a very, very reckless fighter. In the (Juan Manuel) Marquez fight (where Pacquiao was knocked out in the sixth round) he was fighting very reckless.

My career would have probably not lasted this long if I was that reckless.

If Pacquiao does stray from controlled aggression to reckless abandon, Mayweather will meticulously dismantle him. But with 57 wins under his belt, Pacquiao is a man who is experienced enough to pay the requisite respect to his opponent, and while it may not be in keeping with his patented ferocity, a slow start will suit him in that respect.

But as we can see, via ESPN, as the fight goes on, expect Pacquiao to up the ante:

Another factor that will prevent this one from being a proper slobber-knocker is the age of the two men. Had the fight happened five years ago, we would have been treated to a much more dynamic affair, but because both Mayweather and Pacquiao are fast approaching the twilight of their careers, expect each to try to keep something in reserve for the later rounds.

Neither man will come out swinging from the hip.

Nonetheless, Bob Canobbio of Compubox told Bleacher Report that the statistics point toward an entertaining fight:

Mayweather has made his career out of being an unashamed spoiler, though. His defensive acumen is rightly revered, but the shoulder rolls and clinching rarely make for an aesthetic spectacle. However, the American has yet to face anyone with an index of qualities quite like his upcoming opponent.

If ""Pac-Man" boxes with a shrewd combination of intelligence and intensity, he can pick up rounds aplenty against Floyd. If the fight does become bogged down early on, the Filipino must exert patience, before imposing his superior work rate later on to take the fight away from Mayweather and cement his status among boxing’s immortals.
